4 Reasons To Reduce Your Consumption Of Eggs

By doing a quick search around the internet, you are likely to find plenty of articles that enthuse about the nutritional value of eggs; how they’re full of protein yet low in calories etc. However, if you look a little deeper, there is a growing number of studies that reveal eggs aren’t as healthy as we first thought. In fact, they’ve been linked to increasing the risk of heart disease and even premature death.

The main reason that I decided to quit eggs for good was the moment that I found out how cruel the industry is. The more I looked into it, the more I realised that there are many valid reasons for eating fewer eggs. This article outlines several of those reasons...

High in cholesterol

One egg yolk contains around 185 milligrams of cholesterol, which is more than half of the daily amount of cholesterol that dietary guidelines recommend. Your body requires some cholesterol, but too much of it can lead to serious health problems like heart disease (which is the leading cause of death worldwide).

If you’re looking to lower your cholesterol, consider cutting out eggs and replacing them with a variety of nutritious plant foods as cholesterol is only found in foods that come from animals. The majority of cholesterol-busting foods actually come from plants, such as nuts, fruits, and vegetables.

There are alternatives

People have been experimenting with alternatives to eggs for years, which is why there are many options to choose from. Egg substitutes can come in many forms from flax seeds to ready-made products (such as Oggs and Free & Easy). Baking without eggs is likely easier than you think, there’s nothing out there that can’t be veganised, from cheesecake to banana bread!

Unethical industry

A few years ago, The Guardian published out an article stating that free-range is a con, and there’s no such thing as an ‘ethical egg’. The piece suggests that we have all been fooled into thinking that UK reared chickens live happy lives with endless land to roam when, in reality, it couldn’t be further from the truth. The true story is that modern-day farms keep chickens in terrible conditions where they're forced to lay 500 eggs per year when in the wild they would lay just 20.

Chickens are by far the most mistreated animal in the agriculture industry. Billions are killed for food each year, and practices in the egg industry are barbaric. Male chicks are ground up for meat as soon as they’re born, and female chicks are doomed to endure the same exhausting, painful fate as their mothers. Their beaks are cut off to avoid chickens pecking each other in the crowded conditions that they’re forced to live in where disease runs rampant. Many free-range companies have been exposed for not providing the welfare standards that they have promised.

Risk of food poisoning

It’s far too easy to get sick after consuming eggs, so why run the risk? It’s conceivable that salmonella bacteria may survive the majority of cooking processes, possibly even in eggs that have been boiled for up to 8 minutes, and I’m sure you can agree with me when I say that it’s a horrendous illness to suffer through! The beauty of plant-based egg substitutes is that there's no need to worry about salmonella.
