Top Meat Alternatives To Try This Veganuary

There's never been a better time to be a vegan. More people than ever before are cutting down on animal products, which means that plant-based alternatives are popping up everywhere you look.

Using vegetables and legumes as the main part of your meals is a fine choice, and not to mention healthy. But if you ever find yourself craving something with more of a 'meaty' flavour and firmer bite, there's a whole world of meat alternatives to enjoy.

Gone are the days when vegans were restricted to bean burgers and falafels. We're living in a time of hyper-realistic vegan alternatives, from hot dogs to black pudding.

Bacon - THIS

Bacon, facon, plant-based bacon, fake bacon, whatever you want to call it, it's undeniably delicious. And the plant-based company THIS have one of the most realistic, flavoursome bacon products out there. It's made from soy protein, pea protein and vegetable extracts. All you have to do is pan-fry for a few minutes in a drop of oil, and then you'll be ready to use this product in many different ways, from carbonara to the classic bacon 'butty'.

Burger - Beyond Meat

Meat-free burgers have taken over restaurant and takeaway menus everywhere. You've likely seen them in supermarket aisles, online stores, and even served at non-vegan occasions! Vegan burgers are so common that you can sometimes find them tucked away in the meat aisle of the supermarket, too. And when I say 'vegan burger', I mean the super meaty, juicy kind, as opposed to bean burgers or veggie burgers (which are also great in their own way). So if you're on the prowl for the perfect plant-based burger, you can always count on Beyond Meat to satisfy your cravings.

Mince - The Meatless Farm

The Meatless Farm Meat-Free Mince is packaged just like mince, high in protein, a great source of fibre, and it tastes incredible - all without the cholesterol and saturated fat content. This product is essentially all of the good stuff in mince, without all of the bad stuff! If you want to use it to its full potential, make sure you fry it in a generous amount of oil to give it a realistic, firm texture. Your spaghetti bolognese is about to get a whole lot better!

Pudding - The Bury Black Pudding Co.

As you can probably tell, almost everything can be veganized, even black pudding (also known as 'blood sausage'). Thanks to The Bury Black Pudding Company, you can now make a quintessentially British fry up with all the trimmings but much less fat content!

Chicken - THIS

The THIS Isn't Chicken range features a selection of delicious flavours such as Dark Soy and Garlic and Sea-Salt and Cracked Black Pepper. Just like the rest of THIS's products, their 'chicken' pieces are (ridiculously) high in protein and fortified with vitamin B12. You can use these tasty pieces to liven up a salad, pasta dish, make a 'chicken' salad sandwich, or just as a standalone snack!

Slices - Squeaky Bean

Squeaky Bean's Pastrami-Style Sandwich Slices are seriously raising the bar for vegan sandwich ingredients. This product is high in protein, fibre, low in saturated fat, and ready to eat straight from the pack! Sandwich a generous helping of these slices in between rye bread with some dairy-free cheese and mustard, and you've got yourself plant-based pastrami on rye!

Tempeh - Better Nature

Tempeh originated in Indonesia and is made from fermented soybeans. It's a meat replacement that's become popular in recent years due to it being a good source of protein and prebiotics. Like tofu, it's a blank canvas that you can adapt to your taste; however, unlike tofu, tempeh has a slight, nutty flavour. Better Nature's Organic Better Bites are packed with Asian flavours like soy and ginger, making them the perfect addition to a stir fry.

Tofu - Clearspot

Tofu is pretty under-appreciated considering how versatile and nutritious it is. Vegan meat is great, but sometimes you want something simple and adaptable, making tofu a perfect option that can be used in almost any dish. This Organic Tofu by Clearspot is naturally smoked over beechwood chipping in a smoking kiln with just a pinch of sea salt. It tastes incredible on top of salads, stirred into pasta, served up as a side dish, on skewers, and so much more. You can be as creative as you like!
